AFRL University Design Challenge 2013

Purpose of the Competition:

 

This project will increase the ability of Special Operations Groups to react anytime, anywhere.  Current SOG operations lack a dependable, durable, highly portable method to cross gaps and scale obstacles such as compound walls. This device will provide a lightweight, compact, and rapidly deployable bridge to span up to twenty feet. An expected additional use will be the ability to convert into an emergency litter for an injured team member.

Aluminum ladders currently used are relatively heavy and the fixed length is unwieldy to transport.  This system is expected to fit into a backpack-sized carrier, with a target weight of less than 20 pounds for the device. A design goal is to be able to assemble the device completely by hand. Assembly while wearing night vision devices and gloves will be demonstrated.

To meet the design requirements this device implements innovative applications of proven technology. Design optimization combines computer aided design, load path analysis, and static analysis of structural stresses.  Load forces are directed within the structure in a manner such that the strength of required material is exploited while amounts of material used can be minimized.

The design developed meets the size and functional constraints of the RFP, and is expected to weigh approximately 16 pounds. Design intent is achieved by using simple, interchangeable parts to maximize operational availability, while minimizing susceptibility to catastrophic battle damage.  Field repair is achieved by exchanging basic, simple components, with no requirement to adjust or modify parts, and no impact on system functionality.

When fielded, this device will be a simple and reliable multiplier of SOG effectiveness in special operations, enabling safer, more efficient operations.
